March is Autoimmune Awareness Month

Did you know there are over 100 autoimmune diseases?

List of Diseases from the American Autoimmune Disease Association or AARDA

Autoimmune and Autoimmune-Related Diseases

Not included in this list is Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults or LADA or Type 1.5 Diabetes.  Not all medical persons know about it or they just say type one, type 2 and some have their own names like my doctor who uses “progressing type one.”  LADA is an autoimmune disease and it attacks the pancreas like Type one just it likes to take it’s own sweet time.  During the “honeymoon” period it could be a short time until the person needs insulin or years.  My doctor said the average is six years and had one patient that was able to hold off insulin for sixteen years.

My first autoimmune disease was Hashimoto’s Thyroid Disease.  I’ve had it since 1994 when I was pregnant with my son.  Back then you just listened to your doctor and took the pill and got frequent blood tests to see if you needed an increase in your medication.  As far as I’ve known, my doctors have always treated the numbers and not the symptoms and there are over 300, yes THREE HUNDRED symptoms.  Check out the list at Hypothyroid Mom.

That’s a lot of information for one day but I wanted to share some info with you.  Thanks to the American Autoimmune Related Disease Association for having the list of Autoimmune Diseases compiled in one place and with clickable links so you can research a disease.

Does any of this surprise you?  Do you have an autoimmune disease?

So awesome of you to include LADA! Many do not know about it and even as a dietitian, I am not very familiar with it, but I have heard of it and it’s important to have more awareness for diseases that are not as well known to aid with finding better treatment for them.

      Thanks Nena
It’s hard that the medical personnel aren’t taught about it
